Dispersion managed mode-locking dynamics in a Ti:Sapphire laser

We present what is to our knowledge the most complete 1-D numerical analysis of the evolution and the propagation dynamics of an ultrashort laser pulse in a Ti:Sapphire laser oscillator. This study confirms the dispersion managed model of mode-locking, and emphasizes the role of the Kerr nonlinearity in generating mode-locked spectra with a smooth and well-behaved spectral phase. A very good agreement with preliminary experimental measurements is found.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Optics Letter

Viable Singularity-Free f(R) Gravity Without a Cosmological Constant

Several authors have argued that self-consistent f(R)f(R) gravity models distinct from Λ\Lambda CDM are almost ruled out. Confronting such claims, we present a particular two-parameter f(R)f(R) model that: (a) is cosmologically viable and distinguishable from Λ\Lambda CDM; (b) is compatible with the existence of relativistic stars; (c) is free of singularities of the Ricci scalar during the cosmological evolution and (d) allows the addition of high curvature corrections that could be relevant for inflation.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Drawing on experience with training psychiatric social workers at the University of Zaragoza, an analysis is made of the trajectory of this training within the regulatory framework of the moment, its characteristics and the possibilities that exist at the time taking into account the basic characteristics of western health systems, which are increasingly less likely to recognize the importance of social factors. Next, some issues are posed which should be considered in the design of new training offerings

Non-stochastic behavior of atomic surface diffusion on Cu(111) at all temperatures

Atomic diffusion is usually understood as a succession of random, independent displacements of an adatom over the surface's potential energy landscape. Nevertheless, an analysis of Molecular Dynamics simulations of self-diffusion on Cu(111) demonstrates the existence of different types of correlations in the atomic jumps at all temperatures. Thus, the atomic displacements cannot be correctly described in terms of a random walk model. This fact has a profound impact on the determination and interpretation of diffusion coefficients.Comment: 5 figure

Mantle dynamics and volcanism emplacement in the Azores

The Azores plateau is a triangular shaped topographic feature encompassing the boundary zone where three major tectonic plates (EU, NU and NA) meet. The eastern side of the plateau is delimited by two major tectonic discontinuities: the Mid Atlantic Ridge, and the Terceira Rift, a recently formed ultra-slow-spreading ridge. The origin of the plateau is still under debate. One hypothesis argues that the plateau would have been formed by successive NE jumps of the oblique spreading axis, where the present TR is the latest stage. Other hypotheses invoke the northward jump of the Azores triple junction, during which the Azores region would have been transferred from the Eurasian plate to the Nubian plate. For some authors, the presence of the Azores plume, a low seismic velocity zone in the mantle beneath, is required to explain the observations: the anomalously shallow seafloor depth as well as the geochemistry of the basaltic lavas erupted within the plateau. Here we use a highly resolved tomography model to quantify the influence of this plume and the surrounding mantle. We model the convection pattern, the induced dynamic topography and stresses, and compare them with the surface observations. The dynamic topography shows two maxima: one northwest of St. Miguel, the other encompassing the Terceira, Graciosa, S. Jorge, Faial and Pico islands. Both swells are approximately located on the Terceira Ridge. The convection pattern displays two distinct upwelling towards these two groups of Islands. This may explain the difference in the geochemical signatures, in particular the unique isotopic ratios observed in some lavas from S. Miguel. The stresses induced by the underlying mantle convection are compared with the surface observations (topographic features, seismic and GPS velocities). The modeled and observed tresses fairly correlate west of our study area but their directions depart east

The Air Transport has suffered a remarkable transformation over the past decade. The way we travel today is quite different from how we did ten years ago. Due to the rise of Low-Cost carriers, the market of air transportation has been constantly changing and presently witnessing the transformation of legacy carriers to manage to continue operating. The main purpose of this work is to assess the efficiency for different Key Performance Areas (KPA) on a case study comprised of ten different airline carriers, Legacy and Low Cost, namely: Ryanair, Lufthansa Group, International Airlines Group, Air France-KLM, EasyJet, Norwegian, Air Berlin Group, SAS, TAP Portugal and Finnair, during a nine-year period, using a Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDA) tool - Measuring Attractiveness by a Category Based Evaluation Technique (MACBETH). With the results obtained in this study, it was developed a model that measures the efficiency of Airline carriers in a defined period of time, using a set of performance indicators, to which are given weights by area specialists.O Transporte Aéreo sofreu uma transformação notável durante a última década.

VR Exergames for ocular diseases diagnosis

    Get PDF
According to the World Health Organization, in 2011 there were about 314 million people with impaired vision, due either to ocular diseases or uncorrected ocular errors. Around 45 million people, of these 314 million, are blind. About 75% of all blindness and visual impairment cases caused by these diseases are avoidable. There are already some practical and relatively cheap tools to make this diagnosis, but all of them are intrusive, which doesn’t make them too attractive. To solve this issue, we thought of a non-intrusive way to diagnose eye problems. So we created a Virtual Reality exergame, EyeCare, that tests users’ vision, while they are having fun playing it. This exergame is meant to be played by teenagers and young adults, using only a smartphone and Virtual Reality visor. EyeCare consists in a game where users have to complete several puzzles to escape the forest. The users play the puzzles to assess their astigmatism, contrast sensitivity, color blindness, and peripheral vision. In the end, the results are given to the users as problems that they may have. With this solution, our goal is to diagnose diseases early enough, so they can be monitored, and thus reducing the number of people with impaired vision and blindness

This mechanism allows the critical components of an application to execute in an environment that guarantees data confidentiality and code integrity, even when a malicious agent is installed on the device. This projects aims to harness TrustZone in the context of a secure runtime verification framework for embedded devices. Specifically, it aims to harness existing components, namely ARM Trusted Firmware, responsible for the secure boot process of ARM devices, to implement an attestation mechanism that provides proof of secure computation to remote parties. This work has been partially supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), project REASSURE (PTDC/EEI-COM/28550/2017), co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER), through the North Regional Operational Program (NORTE 2020)
